Editorial Sept 2012
Heritage Day - A confused Day for a confused Nation.
As our Heritage Authorities did not disclose their interest in observing Heritage Day to heritage organisations such as ours it was incumbent of us not to upstage their apparently secret celebrations.
It would seem that the country has adopted boerewors as their national symbol and like the rest of South Africa we enjoyed a Day with the Family.
Seriously it is sad that Heritage Day has dropped below the horizon. Which is also a sad reflection on the Dept of Arts and Culture who are charged to exhibit a spirit of patriotism on the prescribed special day.
In the past we have invited our members and friends to join us at East Fort to salute our heritage - but sadly this year we have a gun powder problem so no salute was possible.
We hope that we can continue the tradition next year and perhaps we can get Checkers and Takealot to sponsor us on a “We’ll scratch your back if you will scratch ours” basis!
